Maria: Then it was a demon dragon… *lowers her head and looks around before deciding to sit down in a corner of the room she’s in* I don’t want to give birth to a demon… *looks up at Zack and notices his expression* What’s wrong?
Zack: It’s nothing really… but the child won’t be a demon, I can assure you of that. The dragon might have been meansprited, but that’s about it. Dragons can be very majestic courteous creatures.
Maria: *Softly* I don’t want to meet any more dragons. Please, keep me away from them. *curls up* I think I’m hungry now. Is there any food that’s good to eat still left?
Zack: I still have some coins left. If the market area is still open, I might be able to buy something nice for you. What do you feel hungry for? We can buy an entire sack of oats, but with no milk and honey to put with them, they get dull.
Maria: *shakes her head at Zack* Please, all I want is food. I do not know at all what sort of food I want. I’m not even interested in thinking that far. I just want something to eat. Please.
Zack: *sighs and leaves the house, buying a medium sized fish, and several potatoes. He takes them back to the house and stuffs the stove full of wood, closing the door so it won’t escape* Be careful with this. It’s fancy and it cooks well, but once a spark jumps into the house, it can catch fire. I’ll buy you some large buckets of water to keep full so you can douse out fires if they become a problem. *cuts up the potatoes and tosses them in a pot of water, placing it on the stove*
Maria: *slowly nods* I am aware of how dangerous flame is to wood. I used to help my mother cook all the time. *she moves over to the window and pulls a chair over to it. Soon afterwards, she sits down in the chair and watches the scenery outside* This is a quite town.
Zack: *begins frying the fish* I’m glad you like it. Do you think yuu’d like to find a nice man here?
Maria: *lowers her head* A woman who has given birth to a child out of wedlock is not very desirable, sir. *shakes her head* I don’t think it’s much of a possiblity for me.
Zack: *sighs* I was born out of wedlock. So was my. So were nearly all my siblings. I don’t think it should matter if you are loved. My beloved had sex with many other males before she met me, but it wasn’t entirely her fault. Your situation is the same.
Maria: *gasps in horror at what Zack said and shakes her head* By the gods… Do you not study the bible at all? All of that is wrong. *lowers her head* Anyway, my mother was a European’s mistress and I am a bastard child. That will make me even less desirable. I have nothing to offer a man.
Zack: You have yourself to offer to a man. You seem like a kind soul. You cannot help what happened to you. I’m sure any understanding male would accept you for who you are. *frowns* I’ve read some of the bible. It’s alright I guess.
Maria: *quickly mutters the lord’s prayer in spanish and does the cross movement thing in which I have no name, displaying the fact that she is infact Catholic* I’m sorry to hear that. *shakes her head* You should try reading it again. *sighs* And I don’t want to think about trying to court at the moment. I have no family to give me away and no money. They won’t want me at all.
Zack: I can give you away if you really want. And with the rate I keep making money, you’ll be able to have a nice little pool to start a family on. I’d consider looking after you myself if I didn’t already have a lady of my own, and a daughter.
Maria: *shakes her head* Please, sir, you’ve done more than enough for me. *lowers her head and looks at her abdomen once more* I just want to get rid of this demon child.
Zack: Just bring it to full term… *sighs* You don’t have to look after it if you don’t want to. It can be placed in an orphanage or something.
Maria: *slowly nods* I will.. Maybe I’ll set it into the river once it’s born. That will send away the demon. *closes her eyes and sighs* When will the food be done, sir?
Zack: The potatoes are done. They just have to be strained. I will go take them off and you can have them now. *pokes the fish with a fork* This is still a bit raw in the middle. *takes the pot of potatoes outside to strain off the boiled water in the garden, muttering to himself* It would be easier if these guys had sinks… *walks back inside with the potatoes and begins mashing them up with a mashing tool, adding butter to the mix. He picks up a plate and places a generous portion onto Maria’s plate, picking up a fork to place on the plate as he hands it to her* Enjoy. The fish will be done soon. *sighs* You must get tired of eating it all the time.
Maria: *shakes her head* It’s fine. There’s different types of fish and they each have their own flavor. I don’t mind them all that much at all. *grins at Zack as he hands her the bowl and nods* Thank you. *she begins to eat the potatoes, going at a generously slow pace*
Zack: There’s tons more where that came from so you don’t have to eat it slowly. *continues cooking the fish, flipping it out onto a plate* This has tons of bones, so be careful. *closes the stove door to starve the fire of oxygen and sets the plate on a a bench not far away from the stove*
Maria: I know… I just- *shakes her head* I don’t know. I’m not too interested in eating too quickly. I don’t want to throw it up like I was doing before. *lowers her head and takes another bite of the potatoes* This is good.
Zack: *frowns* Alright, but make sure you eat. You don’t want to starve, you know. *picks up a plate and gets some mashed potatoes for himself* Is there anything really nice you’ve always wanted to own?
Maria: *nods at Zack’s request* Yes, I’ll eat. I promise. *continues to slowly work at her food then frowns and looks up at him in confusion as he asks if she has ever wanted something* No, sir… About the only thing I ever wanted was for my family to actually own our land and for my father to not have had my mother on the side just so he could abandon her…
Zack: *slowly nods* I guess having parents that didn’t have much to do with each other is almost as bad as how I was created. *picks at the fish, grinning at her* Now you actually own your own land, so there’s one wish. *frowns* I just wish I could have saved them too…
