Maria: *slowly nods and lies downa gain* I’ll wait here for your return. I’m still a bit tired. Thank you for the food, sir. It was good. *she shivers and curls up in the one blanket*
Zack: There’s no need to thank me… *places some more wood on the fire, then takes the cooking utensils outside again to wash them off. He then teleports away to a farm, plucking up entire armfuls of corn to teleport into his subspace pocket. He also raids the plantation fields for potatoes, tomatoes, oranges, apples, and carrots. After he is content with his hoardes, he teleports back to the cave, lying down on the floor* When it gets light again, we’ll keep sailing…
Maria: *has already fallen into a deep sleep by the time that Zack returns, so she doesn’t respond at all. Instead, she just mumbles in her sleep and continues to shiver*
Zack: *closes his eyes and sighs, resting his head on his arm and falls asleep. He sleeps long after the sun begins to rise, and would remain asleep into part of the morning*
Maria remains more or less in the same state all throughout the river trip. Most of the time she is in a fitful sleep while they travel, being haunted by nightmares of demons who want to rape her and thoughts of her family that she lost. When she is awake, she’s not in a much better state. She remains soft-spoken and reclusive. Then, there are several times when she is just on the verge of tears or openly mourning, even when nothing is present to trigger it. Also, there are occaccional times when she becomes highly nauseous and nearly sickly, due to the developing fetus in her womb.
Still, despite all of Maria’s bad moods, she never once is mean to Zack. She treats him with respect and as her savior. She also respects his wishes when he tells her to do something such as eat or wash up.
At the time Zack reaches a small fishing village near the end of the river, Maria is napping in the back of the boat. She sniffles a bit in her sleep because she had recently developed a small cold. Also, she is huddled up in all the blankets that Zack had stolen.
Zack is silent as he pushes the boat up the river with some paddles and a shallowater rod he stole from another boat they passed by several hours ago. He sighs as he watches Maria, concerned for her health and safety. Still, he continues to push the boat along the river slowly, grinning as he reaches the fishing village area. He crouches down to lightly shake Maria on the shoulder.
“We’re somewhere new. You can wake up now.” He grins. “I’ll go dock the boat and you can stay sleeping in here, or I can go work for a while earn some money to buy us a room at an inn.”
Maria: *cracks open her eyes to look up at Zack and groans* Yes, I’ll stay here, sir… My head hurts.. I don’t think I’ll be able to hold down the food you gave me last night either. *slowly shakes her head* What’s wrong with me?
Zack: It’s probably just depression. *hops onto the front of the boat and moves onto the dock, securely tying the boat up so it won’t drift away* I’m going to head into the town and try and barter some of our extra stuff for money, OK? Perhaps I can earn enough for a room at an inn so you don’t have to sleep in that thing all the time. *hops onto the dry land and moves into the town, not wanting to go too far in case somebody should come and harm Maria*
Maria: *mumbles* Depression…? *shakes her head then softly speaks up to Zack* What’s an inn? I’ve never heard of such a thing… Is it something that rich people use?
Zack: An inn is just a house to stay in when you’re travelling. You can have a real nice warm shower there, and food that isn’t corn, fruit, or whatever fish I’m catching in the river. You’ll be looked after. Stay here, OK? Hide under the blankets. *moves into the town and begins looking for work. He is asked more or less continually about his appearance and many people shoo him away. Not discouraged, he continues looking for a number of hours. He finds a job later that afternoon, and repairs very basic steam-powered farm machines for the townspeople. He works on a tractor for a number of hours and happily clinks the money he is paid in his pocket, heading back to the boat* Maria? Wake up, OK? I made enough money to house you in an inn for three days. We can stay here for a week or two if you want. I can work to earn my keep. *grins*
Awww… poor Zack is going to be so disappointed when he founds out that indoor plumbing is not something that is used yet at this time period (circa late 18th century)
Maria: *looks at the money in Zack’s hand then nods and stands up* Thank you so much, sir. I don’t know how I’ll ever repay my debts due to your unending kindness. *groans as a wave of diziness hits her and stumbles over to Zack. She leans against him and shakes her head* I still don’t feel well…Hehehe…. yeah I had to google up technology from that era. They might have a donkey boiler, but it would be outside for sure. In any case, I’d imagine they’d have something to boil water in, then add it to a bath. Which would be outside too….
Zack: *frowns and holds onto Maria to stop her from falling* You don’t need to thank me. *begins leading her to the inn, paying for a room once he gets inside* Lie down on the bed in the room and I’ll go have them bring you something like porridge, or bread with honey on it. That will give you some energy.Yea, though I think the most common form of bathing was sponge-baths at that time. As for boiling water, that’d depend on how back-water of a town they are in, which is probably pretty backwater. I’d say the way that inn has would be litterly boiling water over a stove then filling up a bathbub which can be inside.
Maria: *nods at Zack* The bed does look inviting.. *she stumbles over to the bed then lies down on it, sighing* Are you certain that all of this is just that “depression” thing? My stomach has been really bothering me…Yeah, that sounds about accurate, hehe.
Zack: *moves to sit down on his own bed and rubs his hair, combing it out with his fingers* In what way is it bothering you? *wipes the oil on his hands onto his pants* I am going to need to buy some clothes for us both in this town. Yours are becoming ragged, and mine just look out of place.Maria: I don’t know.. It just hurts. *shakes her head* I feel very much like I’m going to throw up a lot of the time. Queesy I guess is the best word to describe it. *looks down at her clothing and examines them* My dress just needs to be cleaned, that’s all. It’s not much worse than it is normally.
Zack: *frowns* I’ll buy you a nice dress anyway. You can keep your old one. As for my clothes, even you would say they look funny. Hmm?
Maria: *nods* Yes, the gods must have given you that clothing. It looks much better than anything I’ve ever seen. You must be very blessed.
Zack: *Slowly shakes his head* If I told you where I came from, you’d never believe me. But I’m not a god. I’m a mortal just like everybody else. *takes the bag of coins out of his pocket, handing it to Maria* I’ll get paid more tomorrow. I fixed up a tractor today, the farmer was so pleased, he’s going to tell his friends about me. I’ll be fixing up other farm equipment soon. *grins* Then you can have some real money to do something with yourself.
Maria: *looks down at the pouch of money then up at Zack* What is a tractor? I’ve never heard of such a thing… *slowly shakes her head* And where are there farms in this town? I don’t see any good farm land here. It looks like it’s only good for fishing. *Frowns in confusion*
Zack: The tractor is a machine that plows land. It belongs to somebody who’s visiting the town. His farm is some distance away.
Maria: *slowly nods* I see. I’ve never seen any machines. I’ve heard rumors of the new things that they’re making for farms, though. My family is just too poor to afford such things. Or.. it was. *sniffles a bit*
Zack: *sighs* I’m not going to tell you that it’s going to be OK, because it’s not. And I’m not going to tell you to be sad forever. So, just feel how you feel until you feel better…
Mweh.. forgot my wallet. Can’t buy lunch. *sigh*
Maria: *slowly nods and mumbles* I’ll be alright. I’m sorry. *lies down on the bed* So, we are safe where we are?Eep… that’s bad…
Zack: I think we can stay here for some time. Longer than the cave anyway. *attempts to contact Teresa, remembering that if he could still speak to her, he wasn’t far enough away* *”Hello?”* I’ll let you know soon…Ah, I just cut down my lunch to 30 minutes so I could leave 30 minutes early. I’m not overly hungry. I can survive.
Maria: How will you do that? *slowly shakes her head, not really understanding all the things that Zack can do or what he’s talking about* And I think I can enjoy staying here. It’s quiet.Teresa: *gives Zack no response at all*
