Zack: *sighs at her* Just stay here and try to eat something, OK? I can go and check, but you have to stay here. *moves out of the cave and teleports back to the area of the corn plantation where Maria’s house is. He glances around and scans the area inside, wanting to know where everybody is*
Maria: *slowly nods* I promise not to move… *closes her eyes and loudly sighs. She hopes that everyone is alright*
*Zack would not really need to scan anything for one blaringly obvious reason. Maria’s house is currently on fire, though at this point, the flames are dying down, being that the fire was set a few hours ago. Salvador is no longer in the area, but he was the one who set Maria’s home on fire because she was gone*
Zack: *deeply frowns and steps into the house, wondering if anyone is still alive, and who has died* Somebody should kill that bastard…
All that Zack wouls find is ashes and burnt bodies. There is not a single living being still alive in the house. Most of the heirlooms and belongings in the house are ruined as well, but there may be a few pieces of cloth that are partially non-burnt.
Zack: *lowers his head, feeling quite sad and upset by what he sees. He scowls as he kicks at the remains of a support beam and growls, hating Salvador even more for what has happened* These people did nothing wrong at all… *begins to go through the remains of the house for anything Maria might treasure, shaking off a piece of burned cloth from a scarf or something similar*
There is one thing in particular that had not been burnt by the flames. Maria’s mother had a small jewlewry box, and that box managed to survive the fire with only several scorch-marks. Still, it’s whole and the contents are still inside.
Zack: *picks up the box and dusts it off as best as he can, sighing at the remains of the house. He lowers his head and thinks about giving the remains of the family a proper burial, but it would make Salvador suspicious if he ever returned. So, Zack steps back out of the house, then heats up the air around the house quite drastically so it would burn itself to nothing but white ash. When he is satisfied with that, he teleports back to the cave, looking paticularly miserable* We need to keep moving…
Jenna: *looks up at Zack and gives him a hopeful look* You’re back. How’s my mother? Does she still have the cold? Are my brothers treating her alright? Please, tell- *she stops as she sees the burnt items in Zack’s hands* No…
Zack: *lowers his head and just hands the items to her* I’m sorry… when I got there, it was all burned to the ground… there was nothing I could do. Please, just hold onto these and treasure them. We’ll keep moving down the river at first light tomorrow.
Maria: *Stares at the items as Zack hands them to her, completely in shock for the first few minutes. Then, her eyes slowly water up as her emotions build. Not long after that, she begins to loudly mourn and cry* No. Momma. Everyone. No…
Zack: *sighs and moves over to hug her* I’m sorry. We should have taken them with us from the beginning. They didn’t do anything wrong and they had no right to die. I should have killed that guy when he was with you the first time.
Maria: *sniffles and continues to cry, not paying attention to what Zack is telling her at all. Not to mention, her loud wails may be drowning out anything that Zack says to start with*
Zack: *lowers his head and just continues to hug her, feeling completely and utterly useless right now. He scowls, thoroughly pissed off and wanting to kill Salvador, but knows full well he’s not strong enough to*
Maria: *settles down after a long while, still sniffling though* I’m hungry.. Do we have anything to eat?
Zack: *picks up the bag of oranges and offers one to her* I’ll have to go catch another river cod, or pick some more corn if you want that….
Maria: Fish will be fine. Thank you… *she lowers her head and wipes off her nose on her sleeve. Then, she reaches out to take the bag of oranges and begins to slowly peel one. Soon afterwards, she works on eating the fuit*
Zack: *heads out of the cave and walks away to the riverbank, scanning the water for fish. He manipulates three smaller river cod into drowning, then uses his telekinesis to levitate the fish up and out of the water. He takes a knife out of his pocket and begins to gut the fish, washing them off in the river, tearing the heads off to toss into the river as well. He heads back to the cave and holds up the fish* Are these any good?
Maria: *looks up at the fish and nods* They look good to eat to me. *looks down once more and continues to nibble on the fruit that Zack had given her before. While Zack was gone, Maria managed to nibble through at least one of the oranges without thinking much about it and is currently onto her second one*
Zack: *throws some more wood onto the dying fire, then greases the frying pan, cutting up the pieces of fish with the knife, also spending a bit of time removing the bones from them* Do you eat fish much?
Maria: *nods* My house.. *whimpers and begins to cry once more as she thinks about her home and family* … there was a stream.. Yes..
Zack: *sighs at her* I’m sorry for bringing it up… *shakes the frying pan a bit, then turns the pieces of fish over with the tongs*
Maria: *continues to sniffle and cry for a few more minutes, but settles down in time for the fish to be done. Also, she would have finished off her second orange by the time the fish is ready* I just will miss them…
Zack: *mumbles* I’m not going to argue that one… I miss my own family and I don’t know if I will ever see them again. *pokes at the fish, then picks up a plate and begins to pick up a good portion of small pieces with the tongs, placing them on the plate before he hands them to her*
Maria: But they’re still alive, right? That means that eventually, you’ll be able to see them… *she gives Zack a faint grin as he gives her the fish then begins to slowly eat* Thank you so much.
Zack: *mumbles* There’s no need to thank me… *just begins to eat in silence for a while, not wanting to bring up a topic that would make Maria sad or cry again. He finishes off his meal and warms up his hands* We have a long way to move yet. I might as well stock up on supplies before we move out. It might be a long time before we come across another farm again.
