Sephiroth wasn’t sure if this was adding insult to injury or not. He made a sharp snort and muttered for a moment before finally replying.
“I am free around 12:30pm,” He said with more calm. “Come by my office at that time. Do not be late. I am quite busy otherwise.”
Desiree grinned as her father agreed. As she responded, she released a soft chuckle, “I”ll be there. The only thing that will keep me up is a diaper explosion, Father… Anyway, I’ll see you later tonight. Thank you again.”
Sephiroth made a disgruntled sound at the comment of the diaper explosion. It reminded him of his own situation with Kether. He was already unhappy about it and made further muttering sounds, sighing.
“I will see you later. I have things to do still.” With that, he hung up his phone.
Desiree grinned as she hung up her phone. She was more than happy that everything went along at least relatively smoothly. Sephiroth was not likely to back out now that she got him to give his word.
So, for the next couple of hours, she gathered up her papers as well as prepared the children. By the time that 12:30 came along, she strolled up to Sephiroth’s office door before she knocked.
Sephiroth pressed a button on the intercom on his desk, which radio-remotely unlocked the door to his office, causing it to open gently, swinging open. He didn’t bother getting up. He remained looking at his work and continued writing away, looking very bored indeed.
He finally looked up at Desiree after the door had opened, then tapped his desk clock. “You’re a minute early.”
Desiree was carrying Orpheus in her arms as she stepped into Sephiroth’s office. She also had Milena with her, since Kalysto was at work. As she stepped into the office, Sephiroth’s eldest daughter grinned at him before she nodded.
“Well, by my watch, I’m right on time,” Desiree countered. “Anyway, you don’t like to have your time being wasted. Even though you basically lost eight years of your life in the lifestream anyway.”
Sephiroth shook his head when he noticed that Desiree had brought the children along. “You couldn’t leave them with somebody else?” He sighed. “As long as they are quiet and don’t destroy anything, I don’t think anybody will care. But generally, we don’t bring small children here.”
He moved out of his office, waving off down the hallway. “Come, follow.” He stated calmly. “We can eat in the cafeteria.”
“No, Father,” Desiree counted, “I could not leave them with anyone else. Kalysto is busy working at the moment.”
She then frowned at her father’s suggestions. Not only did he indicate an insult to her children, but he was asking her to dine in the company cafeteria. As she frowned at him, she brought her brows down before she snorted.
“Father, I was hoping that we could have a real lunch together. You know, at a restaurant. If you have to, ask Dimitri for suggestions as to where to eat. He’s told me that he dines with that lawyer friend of his all the time.”
Sephiroth raised a brow. Then he nodded his head, waving his arm. “Oh, I see… yes.” He moved back into his office. “Come, sit. Let me order transport to that place in the north.” He picked up the phone, promptly stabbing the hang-up button with his finger.
“Wait. Where do you want to dine? At a seafood house, or a steak restaurant?” He paused, pondering for a few moments before hanging up his phone again, opening a box in front of him to begin sorting through business cards.
“These restaurants are always giving me their cards… I have probably 40 of the damn things archived by now…”
“To be honest, I don’t mind what type of food we eat,” Desiree stated.
Meanwhile, her son had other ideas. Orpheus looked up at Sephiroth as he mentioned steak. He then shrieked in delight before he clapped.
“Burgers!” the young half-elf exclaimed.
Sephiroth peered over the desk, glancing down at the young halfling. He made a vaguely amused sound and began to sort through his cards again, though this time he actually had half an idea of what he was looking for.
“I think we have had our meal decided for us.” He took out a card from the box. “Excuse me for one moment.” He dialed the number on the card, peering over the desk again. “Hello. I would like to reserve a table for four. Yes. Yes. No. When? Within the next fifteen minutes. Yes… yes. Understood.” He hung up. Then he picked up the phone again and began to dial another number, calling for transport.
Whether of the phone calls were necessary though was the real question. In actuality, Sephiroth just wanted to feel important.
Desiree chuckled at her son’s enthusiasm over burgers. Shaking her head, she sat down in a chair opposite of her father as he made the calls. During this time, she rocked Orpheus in order to keep him calm and content. However, the boy was more interested in happily chanting and babbling about burgers.
Upon hearing her father call for transportation, though, Desiree rolled her eyes. “Father,” she scolded, “I own an SUV. We don’t need any special transportation. I have more than enough seats available.”
Sephiroth shrugged. “You can use your horrible thing with high wheels and off-road capabilities. If I am using company resources, we are going to travel in style. The ShinRa have proper vehicles to transport you in style and I am going to abuse them.”
He rose to his feet. “It’s probably already waiting outside for us all. Lets go.”
Desiree snorted at her father’s assessment of her vehicle. She then grumbled, “It’s not horrible..”
Shaking her head, she gathered up her children. Soon after, she followed Sephiroth out of the building.
Meanwhile, Orpheus’s ears twitched as he attentively looked around at his surroundings. He was at a stage in life where his sense of curiosity was more than present. So, he wanted to see everything about this new place.
Sephiroth headed outside, opening his PHS when it rang. He growled at the person who had called him and hung up almost as quickly, glancing to Desiree. “Looks like we might have to go into your vehicle. The driver for the escort car is doing maintenance work.”
He scowled. “So much for my cushion velvet seat and television…”
Desiree tilted her head at her father’s complaints. She then chuckled before she shook her head.
“Well, if it makes you feel better, there are televisions in my SUV,” she attempted to soothe her father. “There’s a screen for the rear seats. There’s also a screen built into the passenger-side console. However, I don’t have velvet in my vehicle. Just plain cloth.”
So, she lead her father to her SUV before she moved to strap in both Milena and Orpheus. Orpheus whined a bit as he was strapped in, for he had been comfortable in his mother’s arms.
Sephiroth moved to sit in the front seat of the car while he waited for Desiree to secure her children. He folded his arms and idly glanced at the dash-board in front of him, scowling to himself, deciding that he’d never own anything like this.
Milena chirped when strapped in. She was quite patient despite moving around, and sat still, hoping that if she was a good girl, she would get food.
Desiree gave Orpheus his favorite stuffed toy before she left him, for he was strapped in and now content due to having his toy. She did one last check on both of the children, who were both strapped in the middle-rear seats of the vehicle, she moved to the driver’s seat so that she could climb in. Soon enough, she started the vehicle before she gave her father a small grin.
“Don’t be that way, Father. The ride will be smooth and you’ll hardly notice it at all. If you want, you can turn on the television there.”
With that said, she drove off toward the restaurant where her father had made reservations.
Sephiroth glanced down at the television before shrugging. “There’s never anything interesting to watch,” He quickly added with a frown on his features, “Not at this time of day, anyway. It really doesn’t matter very much to me whether I have a television or not, Desiree.”
He turned his head to glance at the children in the back seat. While a normal person may have found them strange, Sephiroth wasn’t exactly a normal person. He gave them a slight grin, turning around in his seat again.
These were his grandchildren and he wasn’t even acquainted with them. He felt strange.
Orpheus tilted his head as Sephiroth looked back at him. He wasn’t quite certain what to make out of the silver-haired man that was sitting with his mother. He had not really seen the man before, so he was a stranger as far as he was concerned. Still, he looked ok, so he wasn’t scared.
Meanwhile, Desiree drove to the restaurant in relative silence. She couldn’t really think of anything to say at the time. Not to mention, the trip wasn’t that long. Once she got to the restaurant, though, she parked before she moved back to unstrap Orpheus.
“Father, can you please get Milena for me?” Desiree requested. “I know she isn’t related to you, but I’d still appreciate the help.”
Sephiroth nodded and moved out of the passenger side of the SUV, moving to open the rear passenger seat. He glanced at Milena rather hopelessly, then gently unbuckled her seat, lifting her out to place her onto the ground.
“Greetings,” He said calmly to her. “I am…” He glanced at Desiree, not knowing what to call her. “Your caretaker is my daughter.”
Milena just stared back at the other and began to run when placed on the ground, darting over to Desiree.
Seferia shook her head at Milena’s reaction. She then glanced between the two of them before she nodded toward Sephiroth.
“Since I’m your mother,” Desiree explained to Milena, “this is your grandfather, Milena. He’s my father, just like Kalysto is yours.”
She then nodded to the restaurant. “Shall we go inside?”
Sephiroth nodded his head and moved off toward the restaurant, slipping inside. He wasn’t about to push himself onto the other children, but made a mental note to himself to interact with them more. He walked to the counter and waited until everyone was inside before following the waiter to a table. Glancing back at the group, he instructed the waiter to get a booster chair and a baby seat for Orpheus, then he sat at the table.
“I’m not sure of the set up you require for them,” He stated slowly. “So I accomadated for all of them.”
Desiree gave Sephiroth an appreciative nod for all the things that he had been setting up for the children. Soon after, she took her seat before she handed a menu to Milena. She wasn’t certain if the girl could read any of it. However, she was not abject to letting her look at the pictures.
“This place looks pretty good for a burger serving area, Father.”
Sephiroth slowly nodded. “I picked it out because of it’s wide range of menu items. There’s something for all of us here, I’m sure.” He picked up his menu and began to browse. “As I thought. There is an entire page devoted to children’s menu items.”
Milena picked up her menu, happy to look at the pictures of food. Despite the fact they were pictures and covered in plastic laminate, she experimentally licked a picture of a steak. She seemed quite dissapointed afterwards and put the menu down again, chirping.
“I wan’ food…” She said quietly. “Hungry…”
