Jenna had never really eaten shellfish at all before. They weren’t a creature in which she could hunt. And even then, she wasn’t some sort of shark. So, she had no idea as to how to eat this food.
When Sephiroth jabbed his fork into the legs, she watched and observed him. After a bit, she slowly gripped onto a fork and attempted to replicate his actions, for she didn’t want to draw undue attention to their table. Upon removing a leg, she looked it over in confusion before she glared at him.
“Why are you eating a bit with no meat?”
Sephiroth glanced down at the lobster, then stabbed the fork into the leg cavity, giving it a small twist. He then pulled the fork out, showing her the small piece of scrappy meat that he had managed to acquire from it.
“I work my way up,” He told her. “I will eat the legs first, then the tail and then the claws.”
Jenna squinted her eyes as she examined the meat that Sephiroth was showing her. Deeply frowning, she looked at her own lobster before she snorted.
“That all sounds like a waste. There’s no point in eating that little bit of meat,” the sorceress proclaimed. So, she returned to poking the shellfish in hopes of cluse as to what to do with it.
Sephiroth sighed at Jenna. He picked up the shell-breaking utensil and snapped both of the claws on his lobster, turning it the right way up so he could pull the most meaty parts off. Then he began to eat the claw meat, dipping it in the butter provided for him.
“It’s not that hard. There is just some work involved. You will get the hang of it.”
Jenna froze as she noticed that Sephiroth was breaking off other parts of the lobster. While she didn’t want to make it look like she was studying his actions, she paid close attention to him. Thus, she watched him from the corner of her eyes. Once he removed all the meat from his lobster, she turned her attention back to hers before she began to break it apart. However, she hissed in frustration as the liquids from inside the lobster squirted out at her.
“Stupid human food…”
Sephiroth chuckled at her. He watched his children attack their food with almost no table manners and he grinned, motioning to Azul, who was standing on the edge of her chair, propping herself up on her hands, her face in her bowl mouth chewing at the kiddy pasta meal she had been given.
“You’re in similar company at least. Nobody cares about your preciseness here.”
Dimitri stared at Azul, having completely halted eating his own steak. Frowning, he looked around before he slipped out of his seat. After a few moments, he returned with a booster seat. Thus, he set the seat on the ground before he quickly picked up Azul so that he could set the seat on her chair. Ignoring any complaints she made toward him, he positioned the seat before setting her back in the chair. He then shoved the fork into her hand.
“Eat properly, Azul… There’s people watching,” Dimitri requested.
Meanwhile, Jenna glared at Sephiroth. She then snorted once more before she broke some more of the shell and got squirted once more. So, she grit her teeth as she angrily broke more of the shell. Not knowing that it typical of humans not to eat the abdomen, she broke that as well, since she was in a bit of a rage now.
Azul fanned out the spikes on her tail and hissed. She calmed again very quickly however and sat in her seat properly, grinning as she ate her food. When she was handed the fork she clumsily stabbed it into the pasta, becoming frustrated at how much slower it was than what she had been doing before.
Sephiroth frowned at Jenna, moving in to stop her. “Don’t break the carapice open,” He told her. “It has the guts and rubbish inside of it.”
Jenna froze as Sephiroth moved to stop her. She then scowled before she glared at the lobster once more.
“So? What is so wrong about that?” She grumbled out. Still, she followed her mate’s advice and just took some of the meat that she had already liberated. After giving it a few sniffs, she placed it in her mouth and chewed. “Hrmph, I suppose it tastes alright… Not worth the effort and mess though.”
Sephiroth sighed at Jenna, shaking his head. “In the beginning it seems like a lot of effort. But the experienced lobster eater can ruin and finish one of these with relative quickness and efficiency.” He dipped the next piece in the butter and ate it, seeming pleased.
He ate the rest of his meal in silence unless prompted.
Jenna unintelligibly grumbled as she sparingly ate bits of the lobster that was provided to her. After a while, she subtly handed her left-overs to Sephiroth before she turned her attention to the children.
After a several minutes, Desiree finished eating her own meal she then stood up. Before leaving her table, she leaned in to kiss Kalysto. Soon after, she walked over to Sephiroth’s table before she nodded with respect.
“Father,” she started, “it’s time.” She held out her hand in invitation for him.
Sephiroth was busy tidying the bits of lobster shell when Desiree approached him. He nodded at her and picked up a cloth napkin to wipe his hands on. Then he rose to his feet and took her hand, escorting her to the dance floor.
“This is a nice venue.” He stated quietly. “I hope you are enjoying yourself.” He took her hands in his, placing them in position before beginning to lead her through a slow gentle dance.
A large grin spread over Desiree’s features as she danced with her father. She was more than glad to have him set the pace, for she knew that he wasn’t much of a dancer. Meanwhile, her footwork was held a bit of expertise to it, for Kalysto had taught her how to dance.
As he commented on the venue, she promptly nodded her head before she replied, “Yes, it is very nice. Kalysto did a good job when he picked this place. I gave him full control over the reception.”
Sephiroth continued the slow dance with Desiree, quiet through the rest of it. His expression changed from between stoic to slightly sad. Still, he voiced none of this and tried to keep pace and time to the music, his attention occaisonally drifting to the floor.
The feeling he had about Desiree had returned with a vengeance. He did his best to supress it for he did not want to voice his problems and ruin what was her day.
Desiree slowly noticed Sephiroth’s expressions and body language. To her, she felt that her father was a very bad hider of his feelings. Of course, she had more than sufficient practice reading his expressions when she had to care for him as a child.
So, she leaned in closer to him before she whispered to him, “Hey, today’s supposed to be a happy day. What’s wrong?”
Sephiroth turned his attention down to Desiree and raised a brow. “Hmm?” He said, though he had already heard her and he couldn’t think of a way out of the line of questioning right now.
“I’m alright…” He told her after another moment. “I’m just… well… maybe you will understand yourself one day when you see your own children get married.” He paused, pondering. “It is a happy day. For you. For me… I gave you away. You are all grown now. You are truly no longer my responsibility.”
“Forgive me for thinking that everything happened too fast….”
Desiree blinked as she looked up at Sephiroth, listening to him as he spoke. After a while, understanding spread across her expressions. So, she leaned in to give Sephiroth a gentle squeeze, taking advantage of the fact that the song had ended anyway.
“I’m still your daughter, Father. I’ll always need you,” she assured him. “This is just a formality, it’s not going to be any different from the last few years.”
Kalysto stood at the edge of the dance floor by now, just silently watching his bride and her father dance. He flicked an ear as he impatiently waited for his turn, quiet because he did not want to ruin Desiree’s fun.
Sephiroth nodded. “It is indeed a formality. But it is also a definite. A physical statement… a… I don’t know what else to call it…” He parted from her and bowed formally before offering Desiree’s hand to Kalysto, stepping away to let them dance.
Desiree sighed at her father’s words. However, she knew there was little more that she could do for him at this moment. So, she took Kalysto’s hand before she gave him a large grin.
“Well, I guess it’s time for you to show me your moves, hm?”
Kalysto gave her a bow, stepping forwards to grasp her hand. “Yes, I’ll show you how to actually have fun.” He began to dance with her on the dance-floor, waving a hand to the DJ to play a song with a faster tempo. He grinned with pride as he danced, leading her through the moves.
“You know,” He grinned, “In some cultures dancing is a means of expressing commitment.”
Desiree chuckled as Kalysto picked a faster song, for she didn’t mind a more upbeat tempo at all. Given that this isn’t the first time that she had danced with the elf, she had no issues keeping up with him. However, she wasn’t an expert at dance either. So while the dance might not be competition-worthy, it would at least look proper and well-timed.
“Heh, and in other cultures, they say that a good dancer is also good in the bed, my lord,” Desiree countered.
“Oh come on, Desiree. You already know I’m good in bed – I never fall out. And I can sleep for hours.” He gave her a teasing cuff on the shoulder and continued to dance with her, humming to the music as he moved in time with it. When the dance was over he grinned at her and nudged her shoulder.
“Well, I guess I gotta fight over you now on the dance floor hmm?”
Desiree rolled her eyes before she lightly punched Kalysto’s shoulder in return. She then shook her head at him.
“You know what I meant!” she playfully exclaimed. A grin remained on her lips though, for she enjoyed Kalysto’s sense of humor.
As they finished the dance, she took a moment to look around at the other guests. She then shrugged.
“Yes, I suppose so. There seems to be a few who want to dance with the bride and groom.”
When Desiree had made her statement about dancing with the bride and groom, Arte had sneaked up behind the elf and jabbed him in the shoulder. He made a loud yelping sound and glared at the troll, flicking his ears back.
“Hah, you is too tense, ‘yanno.” Arte teased. “But yeh’ girleh is right – there be more than a few who want to be dancin’ with yer bride an’ groom.” She reached forwards to grasp Kalysto’s hands, giggling at him. “Yer both look really pretty, y’ know that?” She sighed with happiness. “Ah I rememberin’ my own weddin’ day… it was jus’ like this. My father burned a huge roast-boar on a fire. Den I wore ‘de bone in my hair.”
